The Studio

Step into my studio and you will see a room littered, quite literally, with other people's discards. Here, in one corner, is a huge pile of abandoned wooden pieces, topped by a pair of tattered wicker chairs. There, across the way, are piles of metal scraps: smashed tin cans, assorted car parts…the rustier the better. These are my raw materials, my "found objects." For twelve years they have been the basis of my work, the sources of my inspiration. It is in their forms, contours and surfaces that I see my future sculptures.


Shift your gaze and you will now see a table laden with paints, fabric scraps, adhesives and nails…my secondary materials, so to speak. It is through these tools that I alter, unite and ultimately transform my individual discards into the figures and assemblages they have inspired. For, while my work is deeply rooted in the found object, it does not represent the "ready-made". It is not enough for me to simply see a figure in an object and present it, as such, for others' contemplation. It is not at all important to me that original identity of these materials is obvious. Far more significant is the process of transforming them into something utterly new, infusing them with new life, and showing off the unrecognized beauty of their worn surfaces. I strive to create figures with imbued with movement, personality and expression; to arrange their components in a manner both rhythmic and free; to pose them only slightly, rather than dramatically; to always leave room for the viewer's participation and interpretation.

This creative, transformative process is the driving force behind my work. It satisfies my need to work with my hands, to experiment with multiple media, surfaces and textures. It challenges me to solve problems of execution, for the objects to which I am drawn do not always join easily or gracefully. It also nurtures my deeply-ingrained habit of seeing faces and figures in everything – a tendency which has led to my work being almost exclusively figural, despite its abstract, two-dimensional quality. It enables me to explore the themes that intrigue me: human relationships, personalities and emotional beings. These are the opportunities that await me each time I enter my studio, that wonderful space overflowing with other people's junk – with objects of unexpected beauty and unlimited potential.
